The 5th album by the former Odd Future rapper marks the transition to a more optimistic sound though still drenched in the psychedelic atmospheres of the MIKE acolytes to which he belongs. Thus, we get another dose of glitchy beats and warped instrumentals and Earl’s now-signature earnest rapping style but the sonic connection is less powerful now that the style gas become ubiquitous in underground rap.
Thus, the opening run breezes by without much of an impact despite production highlights like the rhythmically obtuse FORGE (Theravada), the hints of traditional music in strings and childrens voices buried behind the bass on the lumbering melody of WELL DONE! (Navy Blue), the exuberant horns on Static and how the second half of Live (Black Noise) deteriorates into mumbling madness in the second half. If Earl’s wordplay can sometimes be impressive, without compelling musical ideas, the songs don’t leave an impression especially in front of more conventional chopped soul.
Nonetheless, the album saves the best for last with three keepers: the stoned and catchy (MIKE-derivative) TOURMALINE (Theravada) with plaintive strings and guitar, the breathless delivery and cyclical piano on Heavy Metal (Child Actor) and the sorrowful closer with touches of harmonica, exhaust (which is co-produced by his contemporary, Navy Blue).
