Jason Isbell – Foxes In The Snow

Now a veteran progenitor of contemporary country music having bridged Ryan Adams and Zach Bryan, Jason Isbell continues his prolific decade with the entirely acoustic Foxes In The Snow – the antithesis of the more expansive approach taken on Weathervanes with the 400 Sound from 2023. As always, the primary highlights are lyrical though Isbell demonstrates sound guitar mastery and the usual simple but effective roots melodicism. The guitar playing often evokes Richard Thompson’s ‘open’ fingerstyle sound.

It is another collection of tracks with similar themes and melodies but even while treading old ground, Isbell still delivers on his quality brand of personal lyricism (Ride to Roberts, Eileen, True Believer), southern allegories (Gravelweed) and nostalgic tunefulness (Bury Me, Don’t Be Tough). Additionally, Bury Me with standout guitar playing and the title track recall ragtime blues and Randy Newman’s ballads. Lyrically, Crimson and Clay and Good While It Lasted (the most catchy and sentimental track) stand out.

While not remarkable by Isbell’s standards, perhaps a necessary respite from the drama and intensity on Weathervanes.
